Interesting Plastic Surgery Facts

Regardless of whether you are interested in getting plastic surgery, you have to admit that it’s fairly interesting. Here are some interesting facts on plastic surgery that you may or may not have known.

– Plastic surgery does not mean artificial or fake. Plastic comes from the Greek word “plastikos” which means to mold or give form. The term plastic has nothing do with the use of synthetic or plastic materials.

– In 1998, Bill Clinton signed a bill which required insurance companies to cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery for women who had undergone a mastectomy.

– 2/3 of plastic surgery patients are repeat patients, it is reported that about five million Americans may be addicted to plastic surgery. One of example you may have heard is Hang Mioku who was highly addicted plastic surgery. She was left disfigured after she injected her own face with cooking oil.

– Dr Gerow got the idea of breast implantation when he saw a plastic bag filled with blood used for transfusion. He saw it take the form of a breast and felt like one.

– Men only accounted for 9% of the total plastic surgeries in 2011, while women accounted for 91%.

– Over the past 15 years cosmetic procedures have increased by 197% Up from 2.1 million procedures in 1997 to 9.2 million procedures in 2011.

– Nearly 10 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures alone in 2011. This means a breakthrough in this industry can mean huge revenues. A new product that can replace Botox can definitely mean a revenue generator.

– One interesting procedure is the voice lift. Possible side effects can include a voice that is permanently raspy or a voice that is too soft or high pitched. Some other uncommon ones: pec implants for men, dimple fabrication, calf implants, toe tuck, and toe shortening.

– In a study by UCLA: 48% of women surveyed said they were interested in cosmetic surgery while only 23% of men said they were interested.
