What Is a Facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure that reduces signs of aging in the lower half of the face. Some of our Houston facelift patients are in their early 50s, while others may be in their 70s. We see men and women who believe their tired or aged appearances affect their professional or social lives and want to correct one or more of the following concerns:
The best way to determine whether a facelift is right for you is to meet with one of our plastic surgeons for a personal consultation. At your consultation, your surgeon spends a considerable amount of time discussing your cosmetic goals and making detailed assessments of your bone structure and your skin’s tone, elasticity, and texture. Based on the information gathered, he or she creates a custom surgical plan that addresses your individual needs.
Complete Your Facial Rejuvenation
Because the improvements from facelift surgery are limited to the lower portion of the face, our surgeons often combine it with other facial cosmetic surgery procedures to give our patients a more complete facial rejuvenation. We may recommend combining your facelift with one or more of the following procedures:
- Forehead lift
- Eyelid surgery
- Neck lift
- Facial implants
- Fat transfer to restore youthful volume in areas such as the cheeks and temples
This 57-year-old patient came to our practice for facial rejuvenation. She looks naturally refreshed after an SMAS facelift, upper and lower eyelid surgery, and a neck lift with the placement of a chin implant.
Facelift surgery can remove excess skin, but it doesn’t address the lines and wrinkles etched into the remaining skin. That’s why many of our facelift patients choose to have laser resurfacing treatments after surgery, which can smooth and brighten the complexion.
“I look like myself, only 10 years younger.”
“People at my reunion kept telling me how great I looked.”
Your Facelift Procedure
Our surgeons perform facelift surgery in our fully accredited surgical suite, where our medical team includes a board-certified anesthesiologist. For patients concerned about maintaining their privacy, we offer a side entrance that bypasses the public waiting room.
Our surgeons use modern surgical techniques that create natural-looking results with optimal safety. Incisions are typically made within the hairline and in the natural creases under and behind the ear — an area that conceals the scars nicely. The traditional or complete facelift provides the greatest rejuvenation; the short scar or mini facelift corrects mild to moderate sagging of the lower face (see illustration).
After making the incisions, the surgeon lifts and repositions the tissue and muscle beneath the skin, and may tighten the muscles as well. Liposuction may be used to remove areas of fat from under the chin or on the neck. Excess skin is removed and the incisions are sutured. We often use an advanced tissue glue called TISSEEL to seal the surgical area. This product enhances recovery by minimizing bleeding and fluid buildup under the skin and reducing the need for post-op surgical drains.
While facelift surgery can remove excess skin, it doesn’t address lines and wrinkles etched into the remaining skin. That’s why many of our facelift patients choose to have laser treatments after surgery, which can smooth and brighten the complexion.

Recovery following a facelift often involves less discomfort than many patients anticipate. Immediately following surgery, you are taken to a recovery room. Many patients are bandaged and have small tubes inserted to drain fluid. Pain medication is available to relieve discomfort, if needed. Most patients return home the day of surgery, although some may opt to stay overnight. It’s important to have someone stay with you for at least the first couple of days following surgery to care for you.
The recovery time varies from patient to patient. We provide detailed post-operative instructions, and those who follow them closely tend to have a smoother recovery.
Swelling is common, especially in the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery. Keeping your head elevated as much as possible helps decrease the initial swelling and ice packs used periodically may also be recommended. Bruising is typical and usually fades after 2 weeks. Avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications during the first few days because they increase the risk of bleeding.
Dressings and surgical drains, if used, are removed at a follow-up appointment, typically within the first week. You may notice some puffiness and discoloration, which is a normal part of recovery and will diminish over the next few weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of a facelift in Houston?
The cost of facelift surgery varies depending on several factors, including the extent of the procedure, the techniques used during the operation, and whether or not we perform ancillary procedures. In general, our prices are comparable to other plastic surgeons in our area.
We present a detailed estimate at your consultation that includes fees for:
- The surgeon
- Surgical suite
- Anesthesiologist
Although cost may be a factor in selecting a surgeon, it shouldn’t be the primary one. Our plastic surgeons are highly experienced with these procedures. We have an established track record when it comes to safety and results.

What is a mini facelift?
Not all patients are ready for a full facelift. A mini facelift is an option for people who may not need the extensive changes that can be accomplished through a traditional facelift. It’s often appropriate for individuals in their 40s and 50s with minimal sagging along the jawline and neck. The incisions are usually shorter, and the recovery quicker.
When can I return to work?
That partly depends on the nature of your job. Patients with non-physical jobs can usually return to work within a week or 2 of surgery. It also depends on your level of comfort with the sometimes visible swelling or bruising that persist past the 2-week mark.
What are the possible risks and complications of a facelift?
Complications are relatively rare following a facelift. Blood accumulating in a certain area of the skin, called a hematoma, rarely occurs and can be removed by your surgeon. Your surgeon ensures that you are aware of all the risks and potential complications prior to surgery.
How long will the results last?
A facelift makes long-lasting changes with results that can be either subtle or dramatic, depending on your goals. Although the surgery turns back the clock, the aging process continues. Still, you should always look younger than your chronological age. Non-surgical anti-aging treatments, such as injectable fillers and professional skin care by our aesthetician, can help maintain the results as the years pass.
